PLEASE NOTE:
Belinda finished working with us at the end of March 2010 to move to the UK. All correspondence for Belinda should be addressed to the practice manager, Antoinette Harmer.
I am a registered psychologist within the Australian Capital Territory. I obtained first class honours in a Bachelor of Psychology from the Australian National University in 2005 and a Doctor of Clinical Psychology in 2009. My doctoral thesis explores the role that self-critical thoughts play in psychological adjustment. Specifically, how the nature and frequency of self-criticism relates to relationship functioning, psychological disorders and emotions such as shame and guilt. My interest in self-criticism has also translated into my clinical work as I have found self-criticism to be a central component in many psychological difficulties
I have been employed as a Casual Sessions Academic at
the ANU, teaching a number of undergraduate psychology courses. I provided
training on the assessment and treatment of self-harming behaviours
to the postgraduate clinical program. I have undertaken additional training
in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which I have integrated into my
therapeutic framework.
In my work I place a strong emphasis on the growth and
development of the therapeutic alliance with all clients. Empirical
research has demonstrated that the single strongest predictor of client
recovery is the establishment of a warm and empathic therapeutic relationship.
Therefore, my approach is centred on understanding each client within
their unique context. Although I always utilise evidence-based treatment
plans, I believe in tailoring programs to suit the specific needs and
capacities of each client. Within this approach I draw from cognitive
behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing, solution-focussed therapy,
interpersonal therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy.
I have a particular interest in panic and anxiety related
disorders, trauma, relationship difficulties, depression, chronic pain,
weight-loss and self-harm.
