Health Psychology

Health psychologists specialise in understanding the relationships between psychological factors (e.g. behaviours, attitudes, beliefs) and health and illness. Health psychologists practice in two main areas: health promotion (prevention of illness and promotion of healthy lifestyles) and clinical health (application of psychology to illness assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation).

Child & Adolescent Psychology

We provide specialist psychological assessment and intervention to help children and adolescents to discuss, explore and manage important emotional, social and educational issues, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, abuse, violence exposure, PTSD, behavioural problems, adjustment problems, sleep and feeding difficulties, socialisation and self-esteem difficulties, parent-child relationship concerns and grief and loss.


Our experienced child psychologists can also provide children and their carers with assistance for child health and medical concerns, learning difficulties and physical/sensory impairments.

Educational, Developmental & Neuropsychological assessments

We provide specialist assessment to objectively measure cognitive abilities of children, adolescents and adults.  We provide you with a detailed report and recommendations that can provide direction for targeted learning programs at school and home. 

For children, assessment is particularly helpful for children with dyslexia or other learning disabilities and determining school readiness. We specialise in assessing students who may struggle academically or who may have a learning disability.

For adults, we can assess cognitive or learning difficulties and traumatic brain injury.

Forensic Psychology

Forensic psychologists apply psychological theory and skills to the understanding and functioning of the legal and criminal justice system.  They often work in criminal, civil and family legal contexts and provide services for perpetrators, victims and justice personnel.  Forensic psychology encompasses issues such as: the causes, prevention and treatment of criminal behaviour; the psychology of police, the courts and the correctional system; and the contributions of psychological evidence to legal proceedings.

Antoinette Harmer is an Associate member of the APS College of Forensic Psychologists http://www.groups.psychology.org.au/cfp/ pending the completion of her Doctorate degree in Forensic Psychology.

After approximately 10 years as a practicing psychologist and 7 years in private practice doing both clinical and forensic psychology, Antoinette embarked on second graduate degree to formalise her grounding and practice in forensic psychology.  Antoinette completed the coursework and specialist supervision for the PsychD (Forensic) at Charles Sturt University under Professor Don Thomson and is currently being supervised to complete a research project in the area of family and child law by Professor Jane Goodman-Delahunty.   

In relation to forensic psychology practice, Antoinette has provided forensic assessments for clients in criminal, civil and family or child areas of law, with the majority of experience in private practice as an independent court expert in the Family Court and Children’s Court (Care & Protection proceedings) in the ACT.  Antoinette has also worked with parents recovering from addiction and their children in a residential drug rehabilitation program and provided group and individual treatment for offenders as a private practice contractor to ACT Corrective Services.

Antoinette has been a lecturer on the LLM (Advocacy) course at the College of Law, ANU since 2006.  She has also provided full day workshops to the Clinical Psychology doctoral students at the ANU.  In 2011 Antoinette in the Course Convenor and primary lecturer for a course entitled “Forensic Psychology and Legal Practice Issues for Clinical Psychologists” – a course run for the graduate Clinical Psychology students in the Psychology Department, ANU.

Antoinette is one of the founding committee members of the ACT Chapter of the Australian & New Zealand Association of Psychology, Psychiatry & Law.
